A comprehensive overview of human anatomy and physiology for yoga teachers with a review of cellular structure, major tissue types, skeletal system, muscles, physiology, with a review of many topics including major diseases.
The class will review anatomy and physiology as applied to teaching yoga, and will include contra-indications of key asanas.
(Required for registered 300 TTP students. Open to general public.)
An overview of pranic body. Study of pranic body, primary and secondary pranas, chakras, nadis, sushumna. Application of sushumna. Sheethal-ikarana practice.
Review of an advanced approach to teaching yoga to members of community with special needs. Teaching yoga to prenatal women, children, persons in chair, and senior population. Teaching yoga to cancer patients and persons with disabilities.
Our weekend on Yoga Philosophy will cover a comprehensive and wide range of topics including the metaphysical basis of yoga in Sānkhya philosophy, the basic structure of the yoga philosophy (and some small differences with Sānkhya), the neurobiology of meditation, brain waves and biofeedback, the five pillars of sādhana, vegetarian diet and the qualities of a teacher.
Given the breadth of the subjects, we will shape the discussion to the needs of the class.
The classical text of Yoga Sutras by Patanjali is the most authoritative, universal and a secular text on yoga philosophy. Composed about two thousand years ago, it contains the philosophy and methodology of spiritual progress leading to liberation. In this module we would study the Parts 1, 2, and 3 of the text to understand the concepts like Yoga, Chitta, Nirodha, Abhyasa, Vairagya, types of Samadhi, Kleshas, and too many others to mention here. The format of the module will be based upon study of sutras one by one as well as developing a top level understanding of the processes and the methodologies.
This module will teach the students principles of Ayurveda. It will discuss the three types of doshas, Vata, Pitta, Kapha and their effects on individuals. It will review the signs and management of dominant doshas.
This comprehensive class will review the six systems of Indian philosophy which form the mosaic of the philosophy of spiritual growth with emphasis on Samkhya, Yoga, and Vedanta philosophies. The class will review Shaivism, the tantric system. The major upanishads will be reviewed. Finally, the great scripture Bhagavadgita will be reviewed.
